Lydia Álvarez: An Example of Commitment and Personal Growth
At SOM Menorca we are deeply proud to share the story of Lydia Álvarez, daughter of Ignacio Álvarez and Laura Riera, who run our real estate agency. During the summers, Lydia collaborates in the family business to help with management. Her recent volunteer experience in Tanzania is a reflection of the values she has grown up with: solidarity, effort and commitment, principles that we also apply at SOM Menorca. Her story, published in Diario Menorca, is an inspiring testimony of how leaving our comfort zone allows us to open our eyes and value more what we have.
A life-changing journey
Lydia, a Business Administration and Management student in Barcelona, decided to dedicate part of her time to volunteering in Jambiani, a small coastal community on the island of Zanzibar. For twenty days, she worked as a volunteer English teacher for children between five and seven years old, who welcomed her with enthusiasm and affection. Her work, in addition to helping with teaching, also involved participating in local initiatives to improve the environment, such as cleaning beaches and building a kitchen in a local village. These experiences not only allowed her to help the community, but also to understand the importance of solidarity and the impact that each small action can have on the lives of others.
Values that inspire
Since she was little, Lydia has grown up with the conviction that helping others is a shared responsibility, a value she has learned from her parents, Ignacio and Laura, and which we also apply at SOM Menorca. Her trip to Tanzania confirmed this idea and allowed her to develop a broader vision of the world. As she herself says, “we are so comfortable that we do not value what we have,” and experiences like this help us appreciate things as basic as access to drinking water or electricity.
At SOM Menorca we believe that the human factor is key in any organization, and Lydia is a clear example of how empathy and social responsibility can make a difference. The same principles of effort, dedication and commitment to others that have been instilled in her family are those that we apply in our real estate agency, where close treatment and personalized attention are our priority.
A lesson for everyone
Lydia's story reminds us that we can always do more for others. At our real estate agency in Menorca, we are proud to have a human team that is not only professionally dedicated to the sector, but also seeks to add value to society.
If this experience teaches us anything, it is that personal and professional growth go hand in hand. The ability to adapt, to understand different realities and to act accordingly is a quality that we value greatly at SOM Menorca, and Lydia is a great reflection of this.
Her experience reminds us of the essential: solidarity and commitment to others, values that are pillars at SOM Menorca.
